Extraordinary would sum up this month’s featured client, Nicci Reeder Waldschmidt and her accomplished ring companions. Enjoy reading about a few of her favorite and most memorable things.
Multi-National Champion JKF MacGregor — “Every day I refer to him as the Best Horse in the World. This horse will literally do anything that he is asked to do. He has taken me to the National’s winner’s circle (Champion or Reserve) for 7 consecutive years and in 3 different disciplines – English Pleasure AAOTR, Pleasure Driving AOTR and Show Hack AAOTR. He has won a total of 7 National Championships, 5 Reserves and has loved every minute of it! We will be taking on Side Saddle this year.”
Memories – “It’s really hard to choose a favorite show ring moment, but this past U.S. Nationals was just beyond belief. My finals with MacGregor and SA Rapid Fire were just two classes apart from each other. MacGregor and I had just won the Show Hack AAOTR when I had to quickly dismount and race back to the stalls to change for my next class. I didn’t even get the chance to give Mac his carrots, let alone realize what we had just done. It was pouring rain and muddy everywhere! I got back just in time to hop on Rapid Fire and enter the ring. We then won the Half-Arabian English Pleasure AAOTR 18-39! It wasn’t until I was back at the stalls, with a margarita in hand, that it finally hit me what had just happened. What an incredible afternoon!”
Clothes – “Someone once said to me that I show horses just so I can wear the clothes. That is not really true, but I put a lot of thought and preparation into what I wear every single time I go into the show ring. I bought my first show Season suit in 1988 and just purchased a new suit this year; that’s 22 years worth of wear! I’ve never doubted that my Show Season clothes have helped me achieve a complete presentation on our horses.”
Downtime – “Spare time is spent with my family, especially Haley, our 4-year-old daughter. She loves riding her pony, Colby, going to swim lessons, and we are adding soccer this summer. I also love to cook huge meals from scratch with my mom.”
Success – “We’ve come such a long way! We started out in central Illinois with just a few Arabians and Quarter Horses of our own, managed a boarding stable and showed in 4-H. Now we have our breeding program, Stargate Arabians, in Kentucky and are fortunate to show multiple National Champions! All along, this has been done as a family, with my parents Gerry and Loretta Reeder.”

Horses have been in my life from Day One. My mother had always yearned for a horse of her own, so as soon as my father graduated from college, he told her that he would buy her anything she wanted as a thank you for working to put him through school. She said she wanted a horse and that was all she wrote. My first clear recollection of horse awareness was before I turned two-years-old. I was instructed to take my afternoon nap because “as soon as my father got home, we were going to pick up my pony.” A Shetland pony — nothing can teach a child more about horses than a Shetland pony! I was not given a saddle until I was 6 because my mother wanted me to have good balance. I don’t think she expected me to be standing up at a gallop across the backyard or hanging off the side at a dead run trying to pick up objects from the ground the way the Indians do it in the movies. Thankfully, it was not too far to the ground, especially considering helmets had not been invented yet. When Patches died, I was in the fourth grade. I was so devastated that I missed over a week of school.
When I was in the fifth grade, I got my first Arabian (purchased at a 4-H clinic). She was a retired show horse who had “done it all” (at least locally) in both English and Western. We came to learn very quickly that she was retired for good reason. She was ring sour and I spent 2 years working and showing her myself and sliding off in every class when she reversed and reared. Quite humbling. Thank God my father is competitive by nature and decided that I should be better taught and better mounted. He found an equitation instructor in Texas by the name of Mrs. Gwen Nix and he found a perfect purebred Arabian by the name of Mon Bandaid+/. The rest is history. Without those two important influences in my life, I know that I would never have pursued horses and competition the way that I have now. And for over 25 years!
My parents are still my biggest fans and I always try to ride my very best when I know my mother is in the stands. My father never watches me show — he gets too nervous. He always shows up for the line up and asks my mother, “How’d she do?”
I can never think about Show Season without remembering my first time meeting (Show Season owner) Sue. We were at the Buckeye in 1985 and Sue was there in her booth. Across the aisle was the booth that was selling equine vacuums. My father was oblivious to clothing but I have spotted the beautiful coat that Sue had on display. Boy, did I want that coat! My father grew bored with my shopping so turned his attention to the vacuums and was trying out the blower feature which was fancied to remove cobwebs. Instead of aiming it at the ceiling, he aimed at the floor towards Sue’s booth. The whole display blew over, the carpet was upside down and dust was everywhere! I was mortified! My father ended up buying that coat that was on display. I think he felt it was the least he could do after his stunt.
That purchase was the beginning of almost 30 years of friendship with Show Season. To this day, they are my “go to” source for anything perfect, fabulous and elegant. The experience from start to finish is almost too much fun! For me, if it has to be extra special, then it has to be Show Season. A lot has changed in the 30 years I have been doing this sport, but my hat goes off to Show Season for always maintaining their personal level of excellence which has set the bar for the industry.
To finish, let me say that my life with horses has been a fulfillment of a fairy tale that a young girl could only dream. The past 13 years in Connecticut, with my husband Russ and the horses that we love and show, has truly been one blessed day after another. Russ is always my staunchest supporter and critic but one is no good without the other. Horses are his one true passion and love and I am so thankful to have someone such as him with whom to share my one true passion and love with.

Arabians have been a part of our lives since Carey and I were married in 1982. We bought our first purebred before we even finished furnishing our house! Although our first Arabian was a successful halter horse, my true love lied with the performance horses, stemming from my childhood show years with Saddle Horses and Tennessee Walkers.
Our son Kyle was born in 1986. On the day I went into labor, I was showing in a halter class. After our son’s birth, I took a hiatus from the horse show world and spent my limited free time showing and breeding our Whippets. We have bred over 60 AKC Champions, have won the National Specialty for Whippets 3 times (in entries of over 600 dogs), as well as over 30 Best in Shows with our Starline Whippets. In 2009, a 4th generation Starline-bred Whippet of ours, Ch. Starline’s Chanel, finished the year as the #1 Whippet, and at the time of this writing, she is the #1 dog (all breeds) in the US.
Nicole was born in 1990 and by the time she was 5-years-old, we already had her up on a horse. When she was 8, we bought her a very safe hunter to show. But like her mother, she gravitated to the higher stepping Country and English horses. Nicole’s youth years were very successful, winning her first 2 garlands of many more roses to come at just 10 years of age in the Country English Purebred and Half-Arabian 13 & Under divisions, capturing Reserve Championships on Carry On+// and Pledge Of Allience. Nicole’s first National Championship was with a very special horse named TR Brazen+// in the Purebred Country English Pleasure at 13 years of age. Her crowning achievements came at her final Youth National in 2008 when she teamed up with our current trainer, and good friend, Joel Kiesner. Nicole rode in 4 classes and came home with 4 National Championships – 3 unanimously! Astride Adams Fire, Nabasken Afire and A Heart Throb MTA, Nicole lit up the arena, and melted her Mom and Dad’s hearts. It was a week all of us will never forget. Truly magical.
For me, 2008 was also a year of incredible memories, including Unanimous National Championships on Adams Fire and Nabasken Afire, as well as a National Championship in the Amateur Maturity on CP Rock On. Thanks to Joel and team Kiesner, 2009 was equally as rewarding. Adam won the Half-Arabian English Pleasure unanimously for the 3rd year in a row, and Guns Afire and I captured the roses in the Purebred English division to make it a consecutive win for me in that division as well! Nicole made a very successful debut into the AAOTR division and took home the Reserve roses in the Purebred English Pleasure on Nabasken!
Our family loves to spend time together, and for those who see us at the shows they will find that most of the time there are 3 generations of girls together – me, my mother Joan and Nicole – with my supportive husband Carey in tow, In between shows, our family – including our son Kyle who is a senior at the University of Arizona – loves to snow ski, travel to warm exotic places like Bora Bora, Hawaii and Mexico or just spend time together at home. We keep several retired National Champions at our house in Rancho Santa Fe including Carry On+//, shadow Fire SSM+// and Barbary Coast+// and enjoy riding them on the picturesque trails several times a week. We feel like the luckiest family in the world to share our lives with the incomparable Arabians, and within this horse community we have met some amazing people, whose friendships we cherish and enjoy so very much.
In 2010 we have a number of exciting young horses that will make their debuts, and we can’t wait for the 2010 show season to begin! As always, we will be looking our best in our SHOW SEASON attire! Our friends at SHOW SEASON have been dressing Nicole and I since 1998, and we are certain their attention to detail has been a part of our success!
Here’s to a great SHOW SEASON for all!
